KEYSTONE - With parts of America's health care system seemingly on life support or awash in uncertainty, it made for a rapt audience this week at the 29th annual Colorado Health Symposium being held at the Keystone Conference Center. Participants piled into the main conference room well before 8 a.m. Thursday - those without chairs had to stand against the walls. Laptops were open, eyes were glued on the speakers as participants appeared serious about learning all they can to improve America's somewhat broken health care system. Colorado Health Foundation spokesman Chuck Reyman said Wednesday attendees were just as dedicated. They participated in the symposium from 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and for many there was only standing room.

SUMMIT COUNTY - Snow will blow as scheduled this season at Keystone Resort, thanks to a deal among the ski area, Summit County government and Denver Water. The resort relies on water from the Roberts Tunnel, owned by Denver Water, to blanket its slopes in white every year through early-season snowmaking. Keystone is allowed to pump as much as 1,500 acre feet from the tunnel between Sept. 1 and March 31 each winter. Denver Water needs to make repairs on the Roberts Tunnel, which draws about 54,000 acre feet per year from Dillon Reservoir to supply municipal water to the Denver Metro Area. The tunnel is 50 years old and requires valve replacements at its east end - a project that must be performed while the tunnel is drained, thus rendering water unavailable for Keystone during construction. The repairs were originally scheduled to begin on Nov. 1 and last throughout the winter until April 4, 2011. "That would impact an entire season of Keystone's snowmaking, which i

SILVERTHORNE - Xcel Energy has identified a new site for a proposed electric-power substation in the Silverthorne area. The utility says it needs the proposed facility, dubbed the Ptarmigan Substation, to meet future electricity demands and to prevent power outages in the area. The proposed site is located on the east side of Highway 9 about a mile-and-a-half north of the Blue River Wastewater Treatment Plant. Xcel is no longer considering two previously proposed sites, at Angler Mountain Ranch and the Daley Ranch, citing issues with grading and technology requirements that would have made either site too costly, according to Xcel's Larry Claxton. Xcel's Dillon and Summit substations now serve customers in the Frisco, Silverthorne, Dillon and Keystone areas. The company says electrical load growth in these areas has been steady, and it projects 2 to 3 percent annual growth in the future.
